Gwenlo College is a home-school situated in Randburg, aiming to improve the education of learners in a small, loving environment. The school was first established in 2002 by Gwyneth Espach and Olwen Jackson. The school has grown with it's learners, and has moved from teaching primary school level to now teaching a Grade 8 class and a matric class. Gwenlo College writes IEB matric examinations, thus proving it's credibility. The school receives it's learning material from Le-Amen Homeschool Provider, who work directly with the IEB. To date, all matric learners have passed their final examinations, with one student achieving a distinction, and many who obtained university exemptions.
The syllabus is the same as that of other private schools in Johannesburg. Students complete Grade's 8, 9 and 10; and then move directly into matric, which is done over 2 years. This enables students to split their matric subjects over both years, allowing them to concentrate fully on fewer subjects.
Gwenlo College teachers pride themselves on being able to maintain close relationships with students in a controlled environment. Students are encouraged to participate in class and to interact with other learners. Classes rarely get bigger than 10 students, allowing personal attention to be given to each student, but still maintaining a social aspect.
